Destiny 2 - Raid concept
Note: Please keep in mind that I began this concept when the traveller was damaged, but I still believe it could make a great raid/story addition.
____
Devouring cell:
The light is just residual power eminating through the walls of the Traveller.
An energy we utilize through proximity.
As it turns out, the Traveller isn't really a living entity after all, but a type of machinery created with a technology developed by an ancient, extinct civilization.
A race that created the sphere, in order to mimic a planet, as it imprisons a seemingly immortal monster that consumes worlds to grow stronger.
..but the beast itself is merely a part of a larger story.
A realization actually.
As this incarcerated creature is quite simply a defence system against infected cells (planets/galaxies), inhabited by viral life like us, that is considered to be immensely destructive to the celestial being we're actually within (this universe).
The multiverse is really just more celestial beings, and the planets and creatures we know of, are merely their version of microscopic cells and life living within.
The real secret is that much of the life in this universe, is like bacteria and germs..
There ARE many more of these world eating creatures (antibodies) though.
Except within this celestial entity, by scale, there's apparently only one per galaxy.
BUT, in the event another one somehow finds its way to us, or another is produced by the body of this celestial..
We must be prepared.
Not only do we need to come to terms with this realization and understand this "Traveller" technology to survive, but we must be able to utilize it, to find a way to repair the immediate damage before it's too late, and our planet is seen as a foreign organism.
The Traveller technology is designed to convert power into binds, and so within the walls of the Traveller, the Devourer is weakened.
As long as the Traveller exists, and functions properly, the Devourer cannot escape.
..but if it DOES escape, there will most certainly be no escape, for us.
____
This opens up the story a lot more.
As our previous enemies, Cabal, Hive, etc..
Now have a more compelling, hidden back-story/agenda.
As it's now known that they were actually coming to steal the power of the traveller, knowing its usable capabilities, and potential for additional technologies.
____
Hidden story addition:
The Vex are actually our allies in a way.
They are really the protectors of the Traveller, also created by the ancients.
The Vex, knowing time on a limited basis, and therefore partly aware of what's to come (if the timeline remains constant), have been trying to temporarily prevent us from discovering any ancient knowledge and technology, that could potentially alter the path.
Understanding that it could possibly change us from what the ancients (that developed the tech) truly need us for, they have been carefully manipulating guardians, to ensure we won't be able to access too much information, too soon.
Which is why the Vex don't ever really kill us, despite currently being powerful enough to.
We are a failsafe.
An underdeveloped failsafe.
Not as a pretectorate, but as a way for the ancients to live on.
Their essence is the ghost.
A ghost searching for a new shell.
____
Secret bonus information:
The ghost is really just the ancient's tech used in a desperate attempt to survive, if they failed in their task to save the galaxy and enslave the antibody.
The ghosts are them, or a part of them, that was sent to find life most similar to theirs, and therefore capable of binding with their "ghosts" and also wielding their type of power.
The guardian, is simply the character searched for, found, and chosen worthy.
Which is why through us, it's able to revive us and no one else.
The ghost tethers to us because it's tailored to our ability to bind to it.
Binding is a way for the ancients, to connect with us on a molecular level and live on inside us symbiotically.
But binding FULLY, takes time.
Which is why the shell of the ghost is needed at first.
To keep their essence contained and alive, until the bind is complete and the "ghost" is completely absorbed within us.
..and either the process has temporarily limited the ghost's memory, or ghosts have been keeping information from us until "time" is up.
Until then however, each individual ancient ghost, lives on by sharing our life force, though a proximity connection not unlike our connection to the traveller light.
This process allows them to live off of us, the host, and us to live off the traveller which draws power from its prisoner.
____
The raid:
The boss is covered (inside and out), with trillions of ads that act like locusts.
They're expelled through his mouth and body, and when full of energy, they are sucked back in to feed the beast-like entity (antibody).
Thus consuming, absorbing, and converting much of the matter and life-force taken, into its own light..
Which only makes us weaker (minimizing our maximum life bar), and it stronger (able to break its binds) in the process.
(Which is precisely how the encounters will be timed.)
Though I haven't yet thought of what happens up to the boss room..
The final room itself will be comprised of no less than two main encounters, separated by mini-encounters of nearly overwhelming waves of life-draining enemies.
A massive hole contains the beast, only partially bound (because much of the binds have been released when the traveller was damaged).
The hole it's in, up to its waist (or what can be considered its waist level), will be at the center of a large spherical room.
Around him, the walkway is continuously collapsing and severely sloped.
The floor is covered/littered with the shells of the dead ancients.
These bodies that are shifting and sliding downward into the pit at the beast's mid level, will certainly become almost unavoidable obstaclses that make mobility at least somewhat difficult.
There will be so many bodies, that it has basically become the only viable, traversable surface.
The walls are covered in rotted flesh from the the devourer tearing the ancient civilization to pieces, as their final wave went extinct, during the effort of binding this best to their prison technology within this room..
A last-ditch effort to save our region of space from its wrath and hunger.
Note:
The room will have evidence of damaged tech (lore), used in their final moments, to extract their ghosts and send them into space in search of potential guardians.
____
Phase one:
As a raid team of six, but up to twelve (difficulty varies depending on the number selected), we will circle the room as fast as possible to avoid the dangers, while protecting one another from waves of these locust-like enemies being released and sucked back in, as the creature appears to breathe heavily, struggling to free itself.
As we fight against the unstable terrain, and the downward pull of what can be considered the devourer's breath..
We must locate through proximity, the exotic gear and weapons that have endured the ancient battle, and are therefore still usable.
It will all be randomly distributed and littered around the room, on or near corpses/empty shells (bodies) that are not yet completely destroyed or ingested.
As we collect enough to cover and empower ourselves (the whole team completely) we must continuously revive eachother, hide and fortify ourselves at times, and shoot our way through the waves.
_
Phase two:
In the second phase, after an intermediate phase of ads, and after the new gear is equipped and functioning, making us stronger and more mobile..
We will find that the devourer can create/form larger beasts from its smaller, locust like creatures.
We will then fight new, unseen and powerful unknown enemies that can only be properly damaged with these new weapons, within this room.
As we attempt to repair parts of the devourer's bindings, we must also utilize the special team related perks of the new gear we have found, and use it to our advantage.
For it will be THESE perks that will allow us to effectively dps (weaken) the devourer, long enough to release tension as we reestablish its binds.
____
Rewards upon success:
The Ghost, using a boost of power from within the traveler, is now able to revive some of the many dead aboard the vessel, that were unable to release their ghosts in time.
(because their ghosts aren't completely out of light).
Upon their revival, and conveniently suffering from a form of temporary amnesia, they're left with limited light capacity.
The new character won't be as powerful as it previously was (straight away), but will eventually be on par with us, the guardians, through leveling.
This opens up the story completely.
It's a fantastic way to start anew, without actually restarting fully.
With a new story, we also have a new class, with new sub-classes, new abilities, new weapons and armour found aboard the vessel.
How much of this gear is usable after the encounter is the question.
We may have to use Vex portals to travel through limited time, and complete the encounter again and again until all of the gear required and desired, is acquired.
Fyi:
In this raid, there will be many rewards.
Exotic weapons for each slot, and a complete outfit of exotic armour, that can be worn together.
Yes, TOGETHER.
Each piece will have its own individual perks, AND additional perks that only work with a complete set.
The first full exotic set in Destiny.
This is how it works..
When the raid is complete, based on rng, a piece of the set, or one of the guns you may have found might remain usable.
If it is, you will know you've received an exotic reward.
If you haven't received an exotic reward, the weapons and pieces of gear will ALL be rendered unusable, and greyed out.
At this point they can be dismantled for materials, and spoils etc, and the raid must be run again for another chance at receiving these specific rewards.
Throughout the raid there will also be plenty of legendary items to acquire.
____
In this part of the story, where the campaign continues, we must convince the Vex that we're ready to take on these responsibilities as descendants of the ancients.
That even though we aren't yet fully bound to them through our ghosts, we have demonstrated that we're ready to use their technologies to protect the galaxy from peril.
Due to the immediate threats, we must ensure the Vex are willing to allow us to use their time tech, to fully acquire the ancient's gear.
Otherwise our very future may still be at risk.
BUT maybe we're not ready after all.
Maybe the ancients aren't exactly what they appear to be.
..and maybe NOTHING is as it seems.
Who knows?
Only the story unfolding, can say.
____
End notes:
Obviously much can be added and altered.
Specifically leading up to the boss room as its concept hasn't been written.
But what do you think of the underlying idea and presentation?
Do you think this is an interesting direction for Destiny 2?
🤔
Thanks for reading guardians!
